Mary Hicky
(1827 - 1907)

Mary Hickey was born in County Limerick, Ireland. She had one brother, David. He settled in Springfield, Illinois and had a store. She had four sisters. Ellen (Ryan) in St. Louis. Ann (Murphy) and Nora (Anderson) in Lecompton, Kansas. Johanna (?) where (?). They all came to the USA at different times.

Mary married James Cessnun and they lived in Illinois. He died before their first child, James, was born. Mary took her young son and went to Lecompton, Kansas where her two sisters lived. There she kept house for Territorial Gov. Shannon.

She later met and married Daniel Mahoney and they moved to a small farm near Lawrence. Daniel worked in Lawrence and went home on weekends. During one of his home visits, Quantrill's raid took their place. He lost many of his friends at that time.

Mary and Daniel had three sons. David, William, and Edward.

They moved to Osage County, Kansas in 1866 in covered wagons and lived in a log cabin for several years.

Daniel Mahoney was born in County Cork, Ireland. His grandmother was (?) Luby. She had a sister married to John Omera's father and a brother Michael (Martin's father and Mane Schaefer's grandfather) and uncle Paddy.

Daniel had two brothers who lived in St. Joseph, Missouri. His brother Ed was putting up ice on the river when he slipped and fell under the ice. They recovered his body the following spring. Both Ed and William married but no family. They also had a sister, Mary, who lived in New York. They think she married and went on a voyage but never heard of her afterwards.

*(It is believed that the above letter is from Mame to sister Nell.)
*(In the 1910 population census, it is spelled Omaera, instead of Omera)
*(In the 1880 population census, James Cessnun states he was born in 1848 in New York.)
